Frequently Asked Questions

I’d love to work with you. Here are answers to some frequent questions, but if you can’t find what you need here please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

  • Get in touch with me via the Contact me page, we can organise a discussion about your requirements and how I might meet them. From there we can get a date in the diary to visit and shoot the garden in question. Bearing in mind a flexible range of dates can be useful to accommodate the whims of the British weather.

It can be beneficial for me to hold a pre-visit so I can assess the path of the light and we can form a plan for the shoot. I love to find out more from you about your garden; do you have any favourite areas or memories and, are there any details in particular you’d like me to capture?

  • It goes without saying we want the images to do your garden justice so to some extent we’ll be guided by what time of year your garden is looking it’s best.

The best times of day for garden photography is around “golden hour” - close to sunrise and sunset. This results in soft contrast, warm light and intense colours.

During certain seasons of year, golden hour can be at anti-social times so you do not need to be awake or present for the shoot. We can discuss access arrangements in advance and I’ll be as quiet as a mouse so as not to disturb you.

  • I’ll arrive at the agreed time (if this is before sunrise then there’s no obligation for you to be awake and present for the shoot) and typically start by getting wide, landscape shots in the best possible light. I’ll then move on to documenting the interesting vignettes, such as landscaping, entertaining spaces and planting schemes, finally capturing some close ups details and plant portraits.

Depending upon the size of the garden or area of the garden being photographed, this can take between 1 and 3+ hours.

  • I use a high quality, digital camera and lenses which shoot RAW files requiring post-processing to produce the best imagery possible. After the shoot I’ll select the best images that represent your garden or design. I use professional software for post production to creatively enhance the images captured, and will deliver you a private, password protected digital gallery for you to view and download the photographs. The delivered files will be optimised for use on the internet or print. These will be available for a minimum of 12 months after the date of delivery.

  • We can discuss intended usage in advance of the shoot and I’ll tailer a package accordingly. Full license terms and conditions can be shared ahead of formal booking.

For Promotional and Commercial use I can provide a license for full usage rights.

For magazines exclusive use by the publisher is typically required for a fixed duration before the images can be used more widely.

For private gardens you can use the images how you wish. If you’d like professional quality prints, wall art or a coffee table photo book, we can discuss your requirements and I can advise on products and services to meet your needs.
